UNIT TITLE: Describes cultural themes and prepares a Biblical response

UNIT DESCRIPTOR 
This unit covers practical steps to understanding deeper levels of culture and relating these to Biblical themes which are communicated through storytelling

29.1

Identifies cultural themes

Gossip and common topics of conversation are analysed for cultural themes
Behavioural patterns are analysed for cultural themes
Stated beliefs are analysed for cultural themes
The reasons why people seek spiritual help are identified
Indigenous interpretations of creative media are analysed for cultural themes.
Sources of comfort, peace and life-meaning in the culture are explained.
A set number of life stories and myths of cultural heroes are analysed for cultural themes.
The intersection of cultural themes with given Biblical themes is articulated.

29.2

Analyses the interaction between formal and folk religion in a specific ethnic group

The formal religion of a specific ethnic group is described.
The folk religion of specific ethnic group is described.
The interaction between formal and folk religion and daily life in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context is explained.

29.3

Constructs a worldview outline

With reference to collected cultural data, a worldview outline is prepared concentrating on the construction of meaning in a specific culture.
The most significant themes in the worldview are identified.
The prepared worldview outline and its significant themes are checked with local people in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context

29.4

Articulates a Biblical response to the worldview

For each section of the worldview outline, a Biblical response is prepared.
Based on the worldview outline and Biblical response, a simple theological primer is constructed.
Based on the theological primer, a catechism is constructed
Based on the theological primer and catechism, identify essential areas for training new believers
The conclusions and construction of the theological primer, catechism and list of essential areas for discipleship are checked with local Christian leaders and expatriate experts.

29.5

Communicates a Biblical worldview using storytelling

A set number of stories communicating a Biblical worldview in relation to the constructed worldview of the culture in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context are crafted.
The crafted stories are told to local people and feedback received.

UNIT TITLE: Communicates a contextualized gospel

UNIT DESCRIPTOR 
This unit develops an understanding of different cultural concepts of sin and enables the trainee to articulate and communicate concepts of sin and salvation in culturally relevant ways

Performance Criteria

30.1

Describes the concept of sin as guilt, shame and uncleanness and its expression in different cultures

The concept of sin as guilt is explained.
Cultures where sin as guilt is more prominent are identified and the way this is expressed in the culture is described.
The concept of sin as shame is explained.
Cultures where sin as shame is more prominent are identified and the way this is expressed in the culture is described.
The concept of sin as uncleanness is explained.
Cultures where sin as uncleanness is more prominent are identified and the way this is expressed in the culture is described.
A comprehensive exploration of sin and salvation in all its dimensions as presented in the Bible is articulated.
The consequences of miscommunication in relation to the concept of sin in cross-cultural church planting are articulated.
A Biblical theology of shame is developed from given resources.
A Biblical theology of uncleanness is developed from given resources.
A Biblical theology of guilt is developed from given resources.

30.2

Prepares contextualized gospel stories

The gospel in relation to shame and uncleanness is communicated using a set number of stories.
Bible stories which illustrate Biblical answers to felt needs in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context are identified
A set number of Bible stories are crafted which illustrate answers to identified felt needs and which suit the intended audience
Locally reproducible and contextually appropriate tools or props for communicating the stories are prepared

30.3

Tells the contextualized stories and collects feedback

A set number stories are told to local non-Christians and feedback is received
Local believers are enabled to tell the stories to others

30.4

Prepares a Biblical response to objections to the contextualized gospel

Objections to the contextualized gospel message are collected
A Biblical response for a set number of objections is prepared using stories
The prepared Biblical responses are checked with local Christian leaders and expatriate experts
The prepared stories are communicated to local people and feedback is received
An evangelism tool using the developed apologetic is created

UNIT TITLE: Explores indigenous theologies and applies principles of indigenous theologizing to a specific cross-cultural context

UNIT DESCRIPTOR 
In this unit different indigenous theologies are analyzed, their relationship to inherited theologies are explained and the relevance of indigenous theology to cross-cultural church planting is articulated

Explains the nature of indigenous theology and its relationship to inherited theologies

The essential elements of an indigenous theology are defined.
The relationship between indigenous theologies and systematic and other inherited theologies is discussed
The common reasons for expatriate rejection of indigenous theologies are articulated

Analyses a set number of indigenous theologies

The teachings of a set number of indigenous theologies are outlined
The development of a set number of indigenous theologies, in relation to the history, context and felt needs of the respective cultures, is outlined
The teachings of a set number of indigenous theologies are analysed and evaluated according to the Bible

36.3

Explores the origin, sources and means of communication of indigenous theologies in church planting movements

A set number of case studies of church planting movements are examined and the origins, sources and means of communication of the indigenous theologies in those movements are described.
The concept of oral theologies is discussed.
The role of creative media in the dissemination of indigenous theologies in church planting movements is described.

36.4

Explores the use of indigenous theology in the trainee’s own or closely equivalent cross-cultural church planting context

A set number of examples of creative media and other means of communication in the trainee’s own or closely equivalent cross-cultural church planting context are researched and analysed for indigenous theologies.
A set number of testimonies of believers, teaching in churches and other forms of oral communication in the trainee’s own or closely equivalent cross-cultural church planting context are researched and analysed for indigenous theologies.
The themes and content of the indigenous theologies in the trainee’s own or closely equivalent cross-cultural church planting context are outlined
The indigenous theologies in the trainee’s own or closely equivalent cross-cultural church planting context are analysed and evaluated according to the Bible.
The content of the indigenous theologies is appropriately integrated into the theological primer, catechism, gospel presentations, and outline of essential areas for discipleship.
