This unit covers the evaluation of different models of discipling and the development of a reproducible strategy for discipling in a specific cross-cultural context

Identifies key Biblical principles for discipling

A definition of discipling is given.
Jesus’ method of discipling his followers is described
Other New Testament methods of discipling are described.
Old Testament approaches to the development of faith, understanding and right living among the people of God are described.
Biblical commands and guidelines relevant to the process of developing faith, understanding and right living among the people of God are described.
An integrated list of key Biblical principles for discipling is prepared.

33.2

Identifies key principles for discipling from human experience

The specific challenges of discipling in a cross-cultural discipling relationship are explained.
How adults learn and are trained in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context is described
A summary of adult education principles is given and their relevance to discipleship is explained
A set number of historical models of discipleship are analyzed
A set number  of contemporary models of discipleship are analyzed
An integrated list of key principles for discipling derived from human experience is prepared.

33.3

Prepares a strategy for reproducible discipling

An outline of a competency profile for a disciple is prepared from the Bible
A strategy for reproducible discipling based on the above profile is developed
For those parts of the profile and strategy where it is relevant, a story-based knowledge curriculum is developed.

33.4

The discipling strategy is implemented in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context

Illustrations of the outworking of the discipleship competency elements in the life of local believers are gathered from a set number  of local believers in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context
The strategy is discussed with a set number of local believers and their feedback is incorporated into the strategy.
The strategy is implemented in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context.
Bible stories are told by a local trainee to people who have never heard them before in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context.
A local trainee in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context is enabled to do simple, inductive Bible exegesis.

UNIT TITLE:  Explains, analyses and puts into practice the process of contextualization

UNIT DESCRIPTOR 
In this unit the process of contextualization is explained, analyzed and put into practice in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context

Performance Criteria

38.1

Explains the process of contextualization

The importance of contextualization to the future of Christianity is explained.
Syncretism is defined.
The relationship between contextualization, syncretism and imposition of foreign forms (without contextualization) is articulated.
Common objections to contextualization are discussed.
The role of the cross-cultural church planter in contrast to the role of local believers in contextualization is defined.
The process of contextualization in relation to specific issues or practices is outlined.

38.2

Analyses case studies of contextualization

A case study of contextualization relating to a Biblically neutral practice is analysed.
A case study of a Biblically ambiguous practice is analysed.
A case study of a practice that other expatriates have condemned but for which there is no consistent indigenous formal opinion is analysed.
A case study of the replacing or contextualizing of a major indigenous festival is analysed.

38.3

Works through the process of contextualization with local believers in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context.

The process of contextualization is applied to a Biblically neutral practice.
The process of contextualization is applied to a Biblically ambiguous practice.
The process of contextualization is applied to an aspect of a major indigenous ritual, ceremony or festival.

UNIT TITLE: Develops a culturally appropriate strategy for leadership development

UNIT DESCRIPTOR 
This unit covers the analysis of leadership development in a specific culture and the development of a culturally appropriate leadership development strategy

Performance Criteria

34.1

Identifies key principles for leadership development cross-culturally

 

A Biblical theology of leadership is articulated.
A Biblical job description for church leaders is prepared.
Biblical models of leadership are described and their relevance to the church is explained
Biblical patterns of leadership development are described.
A summary of adult education principles is given and their relevance to leadership development is explained.
A set number of historical and contemporary methods of leadership development are analyzed.
Cultural patterns of adult learning and leadership development from within the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context are identified.
The relationship between the cross-cultural church planter and the local leadership is defined.
The relationship between the local leadership and the leadership of churches in neighbouring and more distant ethnic groups or communities is defined.
A model of leadership development (including tools) used in a specific cross-cultural context is evaluated with respect to cross-cultural communication theory and reproducibility, as well as the principles derived above.

34.2

Prepares a reproducible strategy for leadership development

A reproducible strategy for effective leadership development is formulated.
Key issues and questions specific to the local context are identified.
An appropriate method for enabling potential leaders to define and answer their own questions is outlined.
Methods for facilitating the development of indigenous Christian stories, theologies and apologetics are outlined.
Selection criteria for trainees are defined.
Material and financial support policies are defined with reference to reproducibility principles.
Selection criteria for trainers are defined.
The relationship of the training program to the indigenous church is clearly defined.

UNIT TITLE: Explores leadership in different cultures and the impact of intercultural interaction on leadership of new churches

UNIT DESCRIPTOR   
In this unit the range of expression of different dimensions of leadership in different cultures is explored alongside the effects of intercultural interaction on the leadership of new churches in cross-cultural church planting contexts.

Outlines the different styles of leadership found among the cultures of the world and articulates a Biblical response to each

The way in which different cultures select and appoint leaders is described and a Biblical response is articulated.

The degree and nature of power in relation to leaders in different cultures is described and a Biblical response is articulated.
The way in which leaders make decisions in different cultures is described and a Biblical response is articulated.
The way in which leaders in different cultures manage and resolve conflict is described and a Biblical response is articulated.
The expectations which followers have of leaders in different cultures are described and a Biblical response is articulated.
The way in which leaders are developed in different cultures is described and a Biblical response is articulated.

39.2

Performs in-depth research of leadership in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context

A description of each dimension of leadership in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context is given.
An integrated summary of leadership in the culture of the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context is given.
Implications for leadership practice and development in the church in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context are derived.

Explores the effects of intercultural interactions on leadership in churches in cross-cultural church planting contexts

An explanation of the concept of paternalism and its impact in cross-cultural church planting is given.
An explanation of the concept of orientalism and its impact in cross-cultural church planting is given.
The nature, extent and impact of power dynamics in the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting context are explored.
The reasons for the dominance of western cultural forms in churches around the world are discussed.
Ways of preventing cross-cultural church planters from imposing their own inherited Christian cultural forms on new churches in different cultures are discussed.
The risks of a cross-cultural church planter leading new churches in another culture are listed.
