31.2

Derives principles for avoiding dependency in cross-cultural church planting

Dependency is defined.
The reasons why dependency in cross-cultural church planting is negative are articulated.
Biblical principles concerning the use of money and material resources in cross-cultural church planting are articulated
The nature and causes of dependency, especially the specific role of foreign resources and personnel, in a set number of contexts are analyzed.
A set number of case studies of cross-cultural church planting where dependency has not been a problem are analyzed.
The nature of the power dynamics between the cross-cultural church planter, other ethnic groups in the context and the ethnic group among whom new churches are being planted is analyzed.

UNIT TITLE: Develops a cross-cultural church planting strategy

UNIT DESCRIPTOR 
This unit leads the trainee through a process which results in a practical, detailed church planting strategy for a specific cross-cultural context

Performance Criteria

32.1

Describes and applies the essential elements of a local church according to the Bible

A Biblical description highlighting the essential elements of a local church is derived
A set number of contemporary models of church are described and compared according to the Biblical essential elements of a local church
With reference to ethnographic research concerning gathering in the culture, a contextualized model of church is hypothesized
With reference to ethnographic research concerning social networks in the culture, the implications of societal organization to the contextualized model of church are articulated.
An experimental model of Biblical church is created

32.2

Analyses indigenous religious practices with respect to Biblical and missiological principles

Important religious practices for a specific ethnic group are identified.
The compatibility of those religious practices with Biblical principles is evaluated.
Possible church planting strategies incorporating pre-Christian religious practices are articulated.
Risks associated with incorporating pre-Christian religious practices into Christian practice are identified.
Ways in which these risks could be minimized are described.

32.3

Outlines Biblical principles of cross-cultural church planting

A Biblical theology of cross-cultural church planting is articulated
Biblical principles which inform cross-cultural church planting practice are articulated.

32.4

Researches different models of church planting

Church planting movements in closely equivalent people groups are researched and principles for church planting practice are derived
A set number of models of church planting are evaluated with respect to facilitating multiplication and indigeneity

32.5

Policies concerning use of foreign (or other outside) money, material resources and personnel are prepared

An integrative set of principles which will inform the trainee’s own cross-cultural church planting practice are developed.
End vision of the church planting strategy is clearly defined
Goals for the strategy are defined
Methods of research to inform the strategy are indicated
Methods and plans for stimulating prayer backing are stated
A set number of strategies for evangelism are articulated
A set number of appropriate evangelistic tools are identified, means of their production and distribution are stated and feedback loops are defined
Intended methods of discipleship, including tools, are stated and evaluated with respect to reproducibility and empowerment of local Christians
A reproducible and locally-empowering method for leadership training is outlined

UNIT TITLE: Engages with a multicultural community, designs a multicultural church planting strategy and begins to implement it

UNIT DESCRIPTOR
In this unit the trainee participates in the secular multicultural community, researches and becomes familiar with the different cultures in the community, develops intercultural interpersonal skills, designs a multicultural church planting strategy and begins to implement it.

Performance Criteria

19.1

Participates in the secular multicultural community

Regularly participates in a secular community activity where people from the major cultures with respect to church planting in the community are also involved
At least one secular activity which serves the general multicultural community is participated in at least once
Ease of conversing with people from any ethnic group living in the community is developed

19.2

Researches the community and becomes familiar with all the cultures represented

An overview of the history of each culture in the community is presented
An overview of the major cultural characteristics of each culture in the community, learnt from a member of that ethnic group, is presented
A map of the natural networks in the community is drawn and the implications for multicultural church planting are articulated
An overview of the social demography of the community is given and the implications for multicultural church planting are articulated
The major secular and religious festivals celebrated by the different ethnic groups of the community are described and ways in which these could be incorporated into a multicultural church planting strategy are explored

19.3

Develops intercultural  interpersonal skills

 The interpersonal skills necessary to help people from different cultures relate to each other are intentionally developed through practice
Cross-cultural mediatory skills to help with intercultural conflict management are intentionally developed through practice
Strategies to cope with pressure from specific ethnic groups to force conformity to their particular cultural model are developed.

19.4

Develops a multicultural church planting strategy

A clear representation of the model of multiculturalism being adopted in the church planting strategy is presented
The implications of the chosen model of multiculturalism for the church planting strategy are articulated
A visual representation of the end vision of the multicultural church planting strategy is given
The approach to evangelism in relation to the mix of different ethnic groups in the community, including how follow-up will be adapted to the needs of the different ethnic groups is articulated
Discipling strategies, including how the needs of different cultures in the community will be met, are defined
Ways of finding a balance between the need for providing a model of Christian community life and the imposition of a particular cultural pattern are discussed
Guiding principles for intentionally laying a foundation for inclusive multi-ethnic leadership are articulated

19.5

Disciples enquirers

By consulting with cross-cultural church planters experienced with each specific ethnic group, the specific discipling needs and appropriate discipling methods are identified for each of a set number of ethnic groups in the multicultural church planting context
An approach to discipling for a specific ethnic group recommended by an experienced cross-cultural church planter is implemented with at least one person from that specific ethnic group for at least three months.
The integrity of the model and strategy for multicultural church planting articulated in 19.4 is maintained in interactions with early enquirers
Members of different ethnic groups who are exploring Christianity are facilitated in discovering the meaning of being followers of Jesus as authentic members of their own culture

UNIT TITLE: Examines history to derive principles for cross-cultural church planting practice today

UNIT DESCRIPTOR 
In this unit the trainee identifies why mass religious movements occur, how the cross-cultural church planter can help or hinder this process and explains how his/her view on truth can affect a developing church planting movement

37.1

Identifies causative agents in mass religious movements

A set number of case studies of mass religious movements are examined from different perspectives
The reasons why each mass religious movement occurred are identified from a set number of contrasting perspectives
Contextual factors encouraging the movements that cannot be changed by a cross-cultural church planter are identified.
Contextual factors in the movements that may be able to be affected or influenced by a cross-cultural church planter are identified.
A brief overview of the anthropology of conversion is given

37.2

Gives an overview of the historical development of the concept of truth in Christianity and its impact on cross-cultural church planting

The way in which the Bible was compiled and validated as the authentic revelation of God is explained
The historical development of approach to interpreting and applying the Bible is outlined
The historical development of doctrine and its relationship to truth and right living is discussed
The historical and contemporary reasons for the hegemony of Anglo-European cultural approaches to Biblical interpretation are discussed
An explanation of interpretive approach to the Bible from a set number of Christian texts from non-Anglo-European cultures is given
A set number of case studies in which imposed culturally-determined Biblical interpretations either impeded a church planting movement or caused it to develop a syncretistic parallel practice are explained with respect to what happened and why they happened.

37.3

Explains, with reference to history, how cross-cultural church planters can help or hinder the development of church planting movements

A set number of case studies of different historical examples of models of unsuccessful cross-cultural church planting are analysed with respect to the attitudes and methodology of the church planter(s)
